Results of a controlled trial of epidural morphine analgesia after vaginal delivery - MIDIRS June Digest 2010

There has been increasing interest in the use of an epidural for pain relief where major abdominal surgery has been performed.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Research Society recently awarded Dr Fiona Duncan of the University of Salford, the Akinsanya Award 2010 for Innovation in Doctoral Scholarship for her project – Prospective observational study of postoperative epidural analgesia for major abdominal surgery – which discusses whether epidural analgesia provides a suitable form of pain relief following abdominal surgery. This coincides with a recent paper featured in the June 2010 issue of MIDIRS Midwifery Digest, which presents the findings from a randomized controlled trial that looked at the use of this for women undergoing a caesarean section. (2010) BACKGROUND: Pain after vaginal delivery can interfere with the activities of daily living. We hypothesized that epidural medication administered after delivery would be of benefit for acute postpartum pain management. The objective of this study was to assess whether epidural morphine after vaginal delivery would reduce the analgesic requirements for perineal pain.
